echo
Echo is what you hear when sound bounces back. People say it when they want something repeated back to them, or when they notice their own words coming back.
What a model may hear
- print command Unix shells and command lines
- output the arguments given to it, often used in scripts to display text or test variables
- network protocol networking (ICMP and TCP/UDP port 7)
- send a test packet to a host and expect the same data back, used to check if a machine is reachable
- HTTP request mirror web APIs and testing tools
- return the request headers and body to the sender, used for debugging what a server received
- string repetition in code programming languages like PHP
- output strings, sometimes with implicit behavior around variables and escaping
- Amazon Alexa wake word consumer voice assistants
- listen for the device name before processing commands, though this is less common in model training data
Where people and models part ways
“Echo this back to me”
Meant: Repeat my words exactly
May be taken as: Run the echo command, which may strip formatting or interpret special characters
Say instead: “Repeat my words exactly without running any commands”
“Check if the server is echoing”
Meant: See if the server responds at all
May be taken as: Send ICMP echo requests or test port 7 specifically, which may be blocked
Say instead: “Check if the server responds to basic network requests”
“Echo my input in the response”
Meant: Include what I said in your reply
May be taken as: Set up an API endpoint that mirrors request data, or enable a debug mode
Say instead: “Include my original message in your reply text”
“Just echo what I type”
Meant: Output exactly what I write
May be taken as: Use shell echo which may expand variables like $HOME or \n sequences
Say instead: “Output my text exactly as written, without expanding special characters”
Tips
- Say 'repeat my words' instead of 'echo' if you want verbatim repetition
- Specify 'no command execution' when you want text output in a technical context
- In networking, say 'ping' for reachability and 'mirror my request' for API debugging
- If you want formatting preserved, say 'keep line breaks and spacing as I wrote them'
- Say 'human-readable echo' to steer away from protocol or shell meanings
Often confused with
- repeat
- no technical command or protocol attached
- parrot
- slangy, no model training on technical usage
- ping
- specifically network reachability, not general repetition
- output with formatting, not necessarily identical return
- mirror
- API reflection of full request, not just words
- copy
- duplication to clipboard or storage, not vocal bounce-back
